Would like to save a clip art and keep the transparent background, except it
has to be either a gif or a jpeg. Is that possible?

======================================
.jpg will not retain the transparency.

.gif will retain the transparence but
may lose color quality.

If the file needs to be in an image
format...saving as .png would be a
better choice.

If you save it as an .emf file it retains the transparency. DJ

If you use it in a HTML document, .emf will not remain transparent. It is a
vector extension.
