can we really use the clip/photo art for logos etc. for small bus

Hi,
it seems strange that we can use any of the art for our own logos, cards,
etc. for small business use. Once we choose a design, do we have to change it
somewhat, so that it isn't the same as someone else's? If we change it, can
we then register it as our own logo?

could be used as a logo?
