Why don't my pictures appear?

Whenever I try to put a picture up in Microsoft Word 2003, it never manages
to appear. I have tried changing the settings around but with no results. I
tried to view in the web layout and print layout view with no success
whatsoever and the control panel settings are not allowing me to alter them.
What should I do about this?

In Word, Tools, Options, View tab, uncheck Picture Placeholders.
