how do I remove the background in clipart

Clipart pics usually have a square white background, how do you remove it so
only the pic remains?

What program are you using? If it is true vector clipart, in Word, select the
image, right-click, click edit picture, click yes to the query, select the white
background and press delete.
If it is a bitmap, use the transparency tool on the picture toolbar.
