What version Office are you using? Have you thought about a corrupted filter? If
you are using Office 2003, did you install the service pack? There is a png.dll
installed with the service pack.

This from a previous poster:

We had this Clip Organizer error about Catastrophic failure with error
0x8000FFFF. Did a manual update of Java, that is, downloaded file to disk
and updated from there. For some reason an automatic Java update kept
hanging so I did a manual update (after rebooting to make sure automatic
install was ended). Now Clip Organizer does not give above error.

The graphic filters are in a folder similar to this:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\Grphflt

Rename PNG32.FLT to PNG32.old. Drag a new instance of the filter from your setup
disk.

did the rename, the new filter copied in was slightly larger - but still same

There are some other things to try. Put Office in your trusted site area. In
Internet Explorer, tools, Internet Options, Security tab, High-light Trusted
sites, click sites button. Uncheck
"Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone." Type
http://office.microsoft.com in the address bar, click add.

Be certain you have the ActiveX Control enabled. In Internet Explorer, Tools,
Manage add ons.

Empty your temporary cache, in IE, tools, delete files.
Move the temporary folder. In IE, tools, Settings, Move folder.

Have you re-booted?

What version of IE are you using? Do you have the Windows sp2 or Vista?

Do you have any Office add-ins? If you do disable them, see if it helps. Did you
check out the MDAC as John Inzer suggested?

Can you receive Windows updates okay? This error is also associated with
updates.

Is your firewall configured for the Office site? Can you download if you log on
as the administrator or a different profile?
