Discussion:
Hello Huston, You have a problem: Error Code 0x8000FFFF
(too old to reply)

It seems the problem

"Clip Organizer cannot complete the operation.

Catastrophic failure
Error Code 0x8000FFFF"

does not want to go away.

I have now had that message several times over the last few days. I have
read the previous posts on this subject and have follwed the advice given.
However, be it a single image or a batch of 48 images, I still get that
message. Its not my computer because over the last few days I have downloaded
- trouble free - just under 3,000 images from this site. I noticed that on
one occassion I actually did get half the download.

Question: is there a limit on the number of images that the Clip Organiser
can handle?

Don't know how many images the Organizer can handle, but it always helps to
compact it. Open the Organizer from start, Microsoft Office Tools, when the
Organizer opens, tools, compact. Might do a detect and repair.

Is your firewall allowing the download? There is a download limit per visit or
3.2 mb or 120 clips. Of course you need to keep your temporary folder cleared.

Hi, Mary
Re Organizer - no haven't compacted it. The Firewall is set to allow
download (I have done nearly 3000 so far from site). I didn't know about the
download limit per visit - downloaded more than that per visit (page set to
48 images by 10 pages), but I get the idea - obviously when the limit has
been reached there must be some sort of flag in the download (explains why I
got only one half of a download and that message). I shall have to remember
that and ease off.

re temp folder - have been looking for it, but cant find it - I take it that
you are talking about the Temporary Internet Files folder (as in Win98SE)?

Done all that. Still getting the same message when I try to download clipart.
Have had a new message on startup of Clip Organiser something about Clip
Organiser being corrupted beyond repair and something about PerUser not being
logged on (will get the full text next time it occurs) This only happened
once. Can I uninstall/reinstall the Clip Organiser on its own or do I have to
reinstall MS OfficeXP?

Thanks for your patience.

Rename the main catalog file.
Mstore10.mgc to Mstore10.old
It is in a folder similar to this: (hidden)

Vista>>>C:\Users\<name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Clip Organizer
XP>>>C:\Documents and Settings/<user name>/Application Data/Microsoft/Clip
Organizer

The Organizer will create a new MStore10.mgc catalog. You will lose all your own
created keywords.

Hi, Mary
Done - Still no joy - still the same old message.

There comes a time when little fixes won't do any more and you go for the
big fix.
It Looks like I shall have to reinstall MS Office and hope that that will
fix the problem. If it does not then I'm up the creek without a paddle.
Interestingly though Clip GAllery will download (copy and install) the Web
Collections/Microsoft Office Online galleries without a problem.

Thanks for your patience, time and advice. It has been much appreciated.

Hi, Mary
Back again. I've been doing some checking.
I downloaded some clipart on my dial-up machine (running 98SE) and saved it
as an mpf file; Transferred the file to an XP machine and ran the Clip
Organiser; loaded the clipart without any problems; checked the versions of
both clipart organisers - here's what I found.

The version of the Clip Organizer responsible for all the head aches is as
follows:
Microsoft Clip Organiser 2002 (10.6308.6830) SP3
1983 - 2001

The version of the other Clip Organiser is:
Microsoft Clip Organiser (12.4017.1003) MSO (12.0.4017.1003) BETA
2006

Obviously I must have downloaded the Beta version at sometime in the last 12
months. Only problem now being is that I cannot find that installation file.

Is that beta version still available - if so where?

One last question: does Microsoft publish all its clipart on cd/dvd? If so,
how can I obtain? (If not - wouldn't it be nice of them to publish on cd/dvd
and then have yearly up-dates?)

The Clip Organizer was introduced with Office XP (2002). It came with its own
setup on disk 2 with a lot of clipart. It worked okay with Office 2003. The beta
is long gone, there is a trial version of Office 2007, I assume the Organizer is

Office XP, Office 2003 and Office 2007 on this computer. When I installed Office

Hi Mary
Yes, tried that without success - also tried to install the downloaded mpf
file but still got the same message. As far as the beta is concerned I must
have downloaded it separately from somewhere else or it would be on this
computer as well [:)]. So it looks like its back to disk 2 to try to
reinstall the organizer - else I'll have to look through about 200 cds and
about 20 dvds in the hope of locating the beta :((.

Anyway this problem has taken up too much of my time (and yours) so far,
fortunately I haven't cancelled my dial-up service so I can still download
clipart and save as an mpf file (which suits me better - I dont really want
to clutter this computer with space hogging items (I need the clipart on my
work-horse anyway)).

Next item on the agenda: internet sharing on a LAN. Everybody keeps telling
me it cant be done without a router - but I wonder.........:).

Thanks for your time and patience - I give up on this problem for the time
being, though I think you'll be hearing from a few more people about it.

Thanks, Bye

Mstore10.mgc to Mstore10.old
It is in a folder similar to this: (hidden)
Vista>>>C:\Users\<name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Clip Organizer
XP>>>C:\Documents and Settings/<user name>/Application Data/Microsoft/Clip
Organizer
The Organizer will create a new MStore10.mgc catalog. You will lose all your own
created keywords.

In Internet Explorer, tools, Internet Options, delete files...
Compact your Organizer. It will help.

Hi, Mary
Re Organizer - no haven't compacted it. The Firewall is set to allow
download (I have done nearly 3000 so far from site). I didn't know
about
the
download limit per visit - downloaded more than that per visit (page
set to
48 images by 10 pages), but I get the idea - obviously when the limit
has
been reached there must be some sort of flag in the download (explains
why
I
got only one half of a download and that message). I shall have to
remember
that and ease off.
re temp folder - have been looking for it, but cant find it - I take
it
that
you are talking about the Temporary Internet Files folder (as in
Win98SE)?
Post by Mary Sauer
Don't know how many images the Organizer can handle, but it always
helps
to
compact it. Open the Organizer from start, Microsoft Office Tools,
when
the
Organizer opens, tools, compact. Might do a detect and repair.
Is your firewall allowing the download? There is a download limit per
visit
or
3.2 mb or 120 clips. Of course you need to keep your temporary folder
cleared.

It seems the problem
"Clip Organizer cannot complete the operation.
Catastrophic failure
Error Code 0x8000FFFF"
does not want to go away.
I have now had that message several times over the last few days. I
have
read the previous posts on this subject and have follwed the advice
given.
However, be it a single image or a batch of 48 images, I still get
that
message. Its not my computer because over the last few days I have
downloaded
- trouble free - just under 3,000 images from this site. I noticed
that
on
one occassion I actually did get half the download.
Question: is there a limit on the number of images that the Clip
Organiser
can handle?

I also have recently had this problem with Clip Organizer and I believe the
problem could be caused by one of later MS Office update patches. In trying
to resolve the problem I completely removed and reinstalled my MS Office
product. (I am currently using MS Office/XP on a computer running Windows XP
pro). When I reinstalled Office and tested downloading clipart from the
Office on-line site, no error occurred. However when my Office product was
automtically updated by Windows Update following the reinstall, updating it
to include Office/XP SP3, the problem came back. If Clip Organizer could be
kept at the original installed version this would be a work around but I am
not clear how this could done, as the Office update patches appear to apply
across the board to all components within Office.

Look at the message (Re: Error Code 0x8000FFFF) from Golden Pirate dated 8-12,
he has a workaround.

Mary, I don't see a message from Golden Pirate on 8-12 in this thread.

Can you please supply a link to the solution?

(I've been fighting this on two different computers. It was working a week
or so ago, but not anymore. Windows firewall is off. Both machines are
running WinXP SP2 with MS Office 2002.)

You can find this thread in Google Groups, type "Golden Pirate" in the search
with the quote marks.
This error has appeared frequently in the past few days. I don't know what the
cause is except maybe the Java Virtual Machine needs updating.
