Getting windows media player to play longer than 4 min.

I'm using a compaq notebook with windows vista.
After downloading movies,windows media player
only replays the first 4 min.

I'm new to all this, and a bit thick.The answer
is probably simple but i cant work it out.
Could someone please take pitty on simpleton and
help me out?
