We're investigating the reports from some folks that have said they can no
longer see clipart. We haven't been able to reproduce the problems on our
computers, so we need some more help from you!

If you're having trouble seeing clipart on
http://office.microsoft.com/clipart, first please try to clear your Internet
cookies and cache with the following steps:

1. In Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then click "Internet Options".
2. Click the "Delete Cookies" button and click "Ok" when asked if you want
to delete your cookies.
3. Click the "Delete Files" button and click "Ok" when asked if you want to
delete your Temporary Internet Files.
4. Open http://office.microsoft.com/clipart
5. Press and hold the "Ctrl" key on your keyboard, click the View menu, and
click the "Refresh" item.

If these steps don't resolve the problem, can you please reply with the
following information:

1. Your version of Internet Explorer (click the Help menu in Internet
Explorer and click "About Internet Explorer." It will say something like
"Version: 6.0.3790.1830")
2. Your version of Windows (click Start > Settings > Control Panel > System.
It will be listed at the top of the page.)
3. Do you know if you have disabled JavaScript?

If you are having trouble with a non-IE browser, please provide the browser
name and version. It should be working in Opera, Firefox, and Safari as well
as IE.

Is anyone using Windows XP having this problem?

When you encounter this problem, is there a red message near the top of the
page that talks about script or cookies?

If you're having the problem, could you try going to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and installing any patches that it
recommends, then trying again?

Hello Chris,

My Communications department is having the same issue.

No red msg about scripts or cookies.
Group policies restrict the use of windows update site.

PCs that work:
WinXP-sp2
Office XP
IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158
Cipher Strength: 128bit
Update Versions: ;SP2;

PCs that don’t work:
Win2K-sp4
Office 2K
IE 6.0.2800.1106CO
Cipher Strength: 128bit
Update Versions: ;SP1;

Starting page:
http://office.microsoft.com/clipart/default.aspx?lc=en-us

Symptoms:
1) Searching for a clipart topic works sometimes; sometimes it gives error
of over 1200 hits (also occurs when clicking on a Featured Collection);
sometimes it returns to original page.
2) Adding the ClipArts to the basket shows up sometimes. When it does work,
clicking on “download” brings up your basket with 0 entries.

Each page displays several of two types of errors.
Object Expected
Unterminated String Constant

Troubleshooting performed:
1) Upgraded IE from 5.5 to 6.0 - no change
2) Uninstalled Java and reinstalled with jre-1_5_0_04-windows-i586-p.exe -
no change
3) Cleared cookies and deleted all offline content - no change
4) Reregistered jscript.dll and vbscript.dll - no change

Cannot adjust or view ActiveX settings due to Group Policy restrictions. I
believe ActiveX controls are turned off. But this worked previously on Win2K
machines. And it continues to work on XP machines with the same Group
Policies.

Thank you!
Kendall

Chris, I've done everything you suggested and now I get hung up on the
"Download the ActiveX Control for Office Online". When I choose a clip, the
system automatically goes to this screen.

Before clearing my cookies, etc., I would select a clip, see the number of
clips selected in the download box, and then when I went to download the
items, the cart would be set to "0", givng an error message and not letting
me procede.

On the "Download the ActiveX Control" screen, there should be a button to

If you see an error message, could you please take the error message you're

bottom of the screen is the message "Done, but with errors on page." No
specific error code.
Post by Chris Brown [MS]
On the "Download the ActiveX Control" screen, there should be a button to
click to download the control. When you click it, a messagebox should appear
asking you if you want to install it - click Ok.
If you see an error message, could you please take the error message you're
seeing and copy it into a post? There are a couple of different error
messages, and it's much easier to find a solution when I know exactly which
error you're getting.
Thanks!

Chris, I've done everything you suggested and now I get hung up on the
"Download the ActiveX Control for Office Online". When I choose a clip, the
system automatically goes to this screen.
Before clearing my cookies, etc., I would select a clip, see the number of
clips selected in the download box, and then when I went to download the
items, the cart would be set to "0", givng an error message and not letting
me procede.

When you click on a category or collection, and you end up at the empty
results page, do you see a red message "Warning: This page requires the use
of scripts, which your browser does not currently allow" near the top of the
page?

Second: are you searching for clips, or are you clicking on a link on the
homepage?

I was searching the website for a problems like mine. But I haven`t seen
any. Maybe you can help me. I have windows XP professional, Explorer 6 and I
just upgraded to office 2003 but the problems were before when I had office
2002.
Whenever I go to download clipart, the clipart box comes up and stalls and
my computer tells me that I`m low on virtual memory and then the whole the
clipart box frezes up even if I try to download 1 clipart. This never
happened before and I`ve had my computer for years. I thought if I upgraded
it would fix the problem box not at all. I have 512 memory and my computer
is completely up to date with everything and fine. I don`t know what else to
do. Thanks for your help....

One more piece of information that will help us track down the issue:

If you look at the security setting for Active Scripting, is it set to
enabled, disabled, or prompt? To find this:
1. Click the Tools menu
2. Click "Internet Options"
3. Click the "Security" tab
4. Click the "Internet" icon, then click the "Custom Level" button
5. Scroll way down, almost to the end of the list, and look for the entry
called "Active Scripting" right under an empty entry called "Scripting".
6. Let us know whether "Active Scripting" is set to enable, disable, or
prompt.

Hello Chris,

We can't check those options at my work due to Group Policy settings. But
one of our Win2K users went to the ClipArt site and was prompted to load
ActiveX controls. After doing so, the site worked for him. But I've tried
this on 3 other Win2K machines and have not gotten this prompt. Is there a
way for us to manually download and install the ActiveX component needed to
see if that fixes the issue?

Thanks!

Chris,

The first time I hovered over the picture I received the following IE error:

Problems with this Web page might prevent it from being displayed properly.
...
Line: 241
Char: 1
Error: Object expected
Code: 0
URL: http://office.microsoft.com/clipart/default.aspx?lc=en-us

I cleared cookies and all offline content. Then when I hovered over the pic,
I got the box and the button for the drop down menu. I clicked the button and
chose Copy. At this point I got a couple more errors. I did not write them
down. I cleaned the cookies and offline content again. I still got the box
and the drop down button. But clicking on the drop down button did not bring
up a menu this time. So I could not get the error msgs to send to you.

I'll try to find out the differences between the PC that worked today and
the others.

Thanks,
Kendall

Hello Chris,
We can't check those options at my work due to Group Policy settings. But
one of our Win2K users went to the ClipArt site and was prompted to load
ActiveX controls. After doing so, the site worked for him. But I've tried
this on 3 other Win2K machines and have not gotten this prompt. Is there a
way for us to manually download and install the ActiveX component needed to
see if that fixes the issue?
Thanks!

If you look at the security setting for Active Scripting, is it set to
6. Let us know whether "Active Scripting" is set to enable, disable, or
prompt.

I've given up, Bettiboo, and went out and purchased on Friday a package of
nearly 1 mil graphics, photos, images, and fonts for about $50. I was able
to access the gallery last night from home (which I had not been able to do

I'm also trying a different browser, Firefox, which may or may not help.
Sending a suggestion to Google that they create a similar gallery of clip

Good luck.

We're still investigating the problem. Unfortunately, the only time we've
been able to reproduce anything similar to the reports here has been when we
disabled Active Scripting (and disabled Allow Meta Refresh, to prevent going
to the error page. These settings are the ones you get when you set your
browser security to High).

As you might imagine, it's hard to create a fix that works when we can't
actually test for ourselves that the fix actually fixed it :)

I'd be interested to hear if this works for you in Firefox when it isn't
working in IE. That might rule out a couple of possible problems.

Yes, Chris, the site works beautifully in FIREFOX. It's an Active X problem.
Perhaps some field testing is required, and the MS software engineers will
need to leave your lofty towers of the Redmond campus :-). It's been a month
since the site has went down. In addition, I'm also having problems with my
home system in that MSN.com does not update. It's still stuck on Sunday . .

Well, I'm glad to hear that you're able to view clipart again :)

This isn't actually an ActiveX problem - ActiveX is needed for a couple of
pieces of optional functionality, but you can definitely load and see the
results page without ActiveX. And in addition to trying this on every
machine we have sitting around here, I've been trying this on home PCs,
friends' computers, even random web kiosks, and it (frustratingly) seems to
work on all of them. Maybe I can tell my boss that this problem only happens
on computers far away from Redmond (like Hawaii) so of course they have to
send me to investigate.

Do you know if you have any plugins installed for IE, like the MSN or Google
toolbars, one of the weather toolbars, etc?

It's interesting that you mention you're having trouble with other websites
too. Could you check another setting for me please? Click the Tools menu
then Internet Options, click the "Settings" button in the middle of the page,
and tell me what the the "Check for newer versions of stored pages" setting
is. Also on this screen, there is a number near the bottom for "Amount of
disk space to use" - is it bigger than 10?

a more specific keyword into the search box."

If I have them select Tools -> Internet Options -> Delete Files, the
search will work once - then begin returning that same error again.

Answers to questions higher in this thread:

IE version: 5.50.4807.2300
Windows version: Windows 2000 SP4
Java script: enabled
Active scripting: enabled
Check for new versions of page: automatically
Disk space to use: 20MB

Any additional information I can provide?

That's very useful information - thank you.

Could you try increasing the "Disk space to use" entry just to see if that
fixes it? We aren't doing anything near 20MB of course, but this experiment
might help narrow down the problem.

Also, do you know if they have any IE plugins installed? Any "Internet
security" software, popup blockers, or other stuff like that? Any idea if
their organization is running something like WebWasher or another Internet
filtering program? I've seen some of them, like Norton, which can rewrite
Javascript on pages.

I have a client that is unable to consistently access clipart at
http://office.microsoft.com/clipart. They are still using IE5.5SP2 on
Windows 2000. It seems the first search attempt is successfull and
"Your search returned more than 1200 items. To narrow the results, type
a more specific keyword into the search box."
If I have them select Tools -> Internet Options -> Delete Files, the
search will work once - then begin returning that same error again.

I increased the disk space to 150MB - no difference!

I noticed that I get an "Error on page" on the lower left corner status
area. Here is a screenshot of the error that comes up if I click on it:

Loading Image...

As for IE plugins, I guess I don't really know how to check for sure in
IE5.5 (there's no manage add-ons button like in IE6!) but I don't know
of any offhand.

For antivirus they run Panda's corporate edition.

There is a Web filtering service on the network. It is Websense
Enterprise v5.1 integrated with a Cisco PIX firewall. We have as many
IP addresses as we could find that are related Office online excluded
from the filtering, but that's a moving target, to say the least.

Thanks!

Thanks. It's unfortunate that IE's script error message is so useless.

My tester noticed that &SubmitSearch=+Go+ parameter in the URL. That's not
supposed to be there. Could you try doing a search, delete that parameter if
you see it, and see if that new URL works? It doesn't cause an error for me,
but I don't have IE 5.5 at my fingertips to test with.

That &SubmitSearch=+Go+ parameter shows up when I click on the "Go"
button. If I press <enter> in the search field, it's not there. At any
rate, whether it's there or not the behavior is the same.

If you look at the security setting for Active Scripting, is it set to
6. Let us know whether "Active Scripting" is set to enable, disable, or
prompt.

It was set to enable. I moved it to disable. And then "errors on page"
message no longer showed.

Read the fourth FAQ here, it is Publisher specific but it relates to
your problem. The solution is the same.
http://ed.mvps.org/Static.aspx?=Publisher/FAQs
==============================
Some info on finding a current video driver:

Go to the support website of your video
adapter's mfg. and search for Vista
compatible drivers.

If you don't know the make and model of
your video adapter...check the documentation
that came with the computer.

Also you could try these steps...
Go to...Start / Run...type...
msinfo32 ...press enter.

On the System Information screen...choose...
Components / Display...

You should find the make and model of your
display adapter as well as the driver version.

If the driver on the support website is more
current than the one you are running...
download it and install it. Also you should find
and follow the installation instructions at the
support site.

Thanks John for your help in locating video driver info and about the support
website. This was easier than 4th FAQ solution suggested by Mary (sorry Mary,
but for a non tech person like me, it doesn't even give a clue as to where to
access View, etc).

Anyway, clip art is now working again. Thanks again.
